Over the course of the quarter, I really learned a lot about how to efficiently design a building. I learned about the different systems and how they actually work within a building. There were so many things that I didn't previously think about and now I know for my next building design what I can focus on! I had a great learning experience — much of my design was challenging but I really enjoyed the process and figuring out the little details. I feel like this challenging design has taught me a lot — and if I now have access to a more simple building design, the actual design of other systems would be a breeze! I enjoyed sticking with my original design thanks to the support of Glenn and the rest of the teaching team. I'm glad that I didn't give up on my original idea and I actually pulled through with it. This class was really tough — but I thoroughly enjoyed it and truly learned a lot about buildings. Check out the key takeaways in bullet points below and also the rest of my journal entries!

  • Key / Essential / Unique Design Features that you explored in your project.
    • Wanted to explore more on the architectural design side - open spaces, curtain walls,
    • Energy efficient design
  • Your Big Successes -- what worked very well and what features you're most proud to share as examples to inspire others.
    • Achieving Architecture 2030 Benchmark
    • Going through with my design
    • Open space
    • Architectural exploration
    • Clash mitigation - for hvac and structural (I feel very accomplished knowing my ducts don't clash with each other! Spent a lot of time on the details)
  • Your Big Challenges
    • Shape of the building was hard
    • Non-vertical elements
    • Understanding non-traditional grid structures for structural elements
    • Energy efficient design wasn't proven to be material efficient
  • Lessons Learned
    • Keep trucking! Don't give up
    • You won't learn unless you hit a roadblock! If your design is complicated that's okay. You will learn a lot more from figuring out how to make it better rather than giving up and going with another design completely
