The building(s) in my design are two separate structures separated on a hillside (topography to be added next week), both connected to research and studies conducted on the Jasper Ridge Biological Preserve. I have chosen to place one building near the bottom of the ridge, facing the Searsville Reservoir to be used as a laboratory space for studies at the reservoir. There are curtain walls around the lab, with solid walls surrounding the bathroom space to provide privacy. As the lower level will have a little less solar exposure due to the nature of it being on a hillside, I chose to have multiple sides be full curtain walls, and might explore adding skylights in as well. The second building, to be intended to be used as a space for an office as well as a classroom looking out over the top of the ridge, only has one main curtain wall to prevent too much sun exposure into the classroom (will also potentially be finding shading options for this space as well). I have placed windows in this space throughout the other rooms to provide for some ventilation at the top of the ridge as well, and am also looking into adding skylights. Lastly, the staircase connecting the two I am looking into covering so as to protect it from rain during the wet season. Shading will be provided mostly by the slight overhangs of the roofs.
