Design Motivation

The inspiration for this module was sparked by the emergency shelter set up during the pandemic. These shelters provided a much-needed safe haven for citizens who needed a temporary place to stay. The significance of these shelters in the community cannot be overstated. They provided a sense of security and safety for those who were struggling during a time of uncertainty. Interestingly, the shape of the tents used in these shelters played a crucial role in making people feel safe, even while sleeping on the street. The tent shape provided a sense of privacy and protection that traditional sleeping arrangements could not, which is then adopted in my design.

Modeling Approach

The first step in my design process is to establish the general shape of the object. To accomplish this, I begin by drawing three lines that form a tent-like shape, but with more organic and flowing curves. From these lines, I generate a surface that serves as the foundation for the design. This surface is then divided into smaller sub-surfaces, providing me with a structure to insert and manipulate panels. These panels can be adjusted and shaped to fit the contours of the sub-surfaces, allowing me to create a design that is both aesthetically pleasing and functional.

Parameters to flex

The design of the shelter is highly adaptable and can be customized through the adjustment of several key parameters. These parameters include the size of the shelter, which can be set to a maximum value in both the x and y axes, as well as the scale factor, which is the ratio of the x coordinate at the top point to the overall size of the shelter. In addition, the elevation at both the top and the edges of the shelter can be modified to create the desired shape and functionality. Whether the shelter needs to be large or small, high or low, these parameters provide the necessary tools to create a shelter that is both effective and efficient.
