Step 1 - Generative Design Framework

In thinking about my future as an architect, something that is important to me is the calculation of the carbon footprint. I want to have that as my central node of my building trade-offs. However some other trade offs I see in daily life are:

  • Productivity vs How many hours I stay up the previous night
  • Quality of food I eat vs How I feel during the day
  • Construction
    • Variables
      • Fabrication Cost vs. Assembly Time
    • Evaluators
      • Module cost
      • Module Assembly Time
    • Most Important Tradeoffs to Consider
      • More time = more money(more carbon footprint)
  • Architecture
    • Variables
      • View Quality vs. Shading
    • Evaluators
      • Does the view look out on a beautiful scenery
      • How many hours of the day does the roof cause
    • Most Important Tradeoffs to Consider
      • Energy loss from windows
      • Energy saved from shading
      • Pleasure derived from the views

      Sustainability

    • Variables
      • Number of material units
      • Sqft of building
      • Hours in a week of active construction
    • Evaluators
      • Carbon emitted per unit of material
      • Material unit cost
      • Time to construct the building
    • Most Important Tradeoffs to Consider
      • More expensive materials could be less carbon intensive but take more time to install
