Here Comes the Sun 🌞
A Grasshopper Generative Design Tool
- Overview:
- This tool looks to aid architects in evaluation & visualization of recommended design options for structures to optimize for view and sun hours that takes into account the structures’ built context.
- While the tool file specifically interacts with a structure that I defined, if the user has their own geometry that they connect into the view analysis and sun hour evaluators, they will be able to generate results for their specific use cases. It’s recommended that users first interact with the geometry currently defined and then swap out for their own projects after familiarizing themselves with the workflow.
- Set your desired inputs:
- Building base placement (x & y axis)
- Values are set via number sliders
- Building base rotation
- Value is set via number slider & constrained between 0-180 degrees
- Building top rotation
- Value is set via number slider & constrained between 0-180 degrees
- Building top scale
- Value is set via number slider & constrained between 0.01-1.00
- Site context (configurable geometry)
- Position your custom context geometry in the Rhino environment, and then click set your multiple geometries to be contained by the geometry node
- Site location (to map correct sun path)
- Use Ladybug’s EPW map to get the link to your desired sun path location
- Outputs
- Aggregate sun + view optimization value, composed of weighted total sun hours and view value (use number sliders to adjust for desired weights)
- Evaluation
- As currently configured, the tool will balance its optimization of a structure, between maximizing view and total sun hours using Galapagos’ single objective optimization and will output recommended designs when the Galapagos solver is run.
- Visualization
- View Analysis
- To access this visualization, turn off the preview for the LB Direct Sun Hours node, and ensure that the preview for the LB View Percent node is turned on
- Point by point visualization
- Enable the Vector Display node, and use the slider to view the view vectors at different points on the structure
- Sun Hours
- To access this visualization, turn off the preview for the node, and ensure that the preview for the node is turned on
- Generated Designs
- After running the Galapagos solver, click on one of the generated cases, and then click reinstate to view that particular design
