Metrics of Evaluation
- One metric of evaluation is the cost of the project. I have used the custom node shared in the drive to calculate the costs. The second metric I used is building compactness ratio
- Compactness Ratio also known as form factor is calculated as A/V, (Surface Area/ Volume). It acts as a proxy for building load demand (based on daylighting and heat gains) in turn for building energy efficiency. The lower the form factor (compactness ratio), the better is the efficiency of the building.
Point to Ponder: Do the new evaluation metrics that you’ve designed capture the meaningful differences between the building form alternatives?
What other metrics would be useful to compute to help understand and make the case for which alternatives are truly better than others?
The evaluation metrics I chose do not vary much with my parameter and design alternatives. However, I think that is because of how my building is aligning itself to produce similar floor, surface areas and volume. The metrics would have shown significant differences if the geometry changed drastically.
Other metrics like calculating embodied carbon with different kinds of materials, solar insolation can also help in evaluating the alternatives better.
