For example in the scatter plot here, I set the x axis as the width of my shear wall opening, y axis is the first story drift, and the size of the data is the wall opening to total wall area ratio. I can see that the seismic story drift exponentially grows as I increase the shear wall opening width, but at the same time I am getting bigger opening area which is also desirable. Therefore, I can make my design decision to have wall opening around 15ft such that I can get allowable seismic drift but also get a good opening for retailers.
