Initial Needs Findings & Generating Ideas for All Areas

Please share a few lines about the initial needs that you've discovered in your empathizing — interviews and discussions with others. Please contribute all your ideas. We're crowdsourcing and generating ideas to help the design teams get started with thinking very creatively about how to meet the needs they've chosen.

Living Spaces

We've found these needs:

  • Flexibility
  • Open
  • Personal privacy might be important even in a family
  • Support large groups
  • Versatility
  • Way to conserve less energy/money for it
  • easy to use / implement
  • comfort
  • Aesthetics
  • Unique and stands out

And here are some ideas to potentially consider (from everyone):

  • Multi-functional
  • Natural lighting
  • Aesthetically pleasing
  • Add more...
  • Simple
  • Tackles local issues and difficulties

Working Spaces

We've found these needs:

  • Ergonomic
  • Productive and organized environment
  • Above the bare minimum office conditions (cubicles)
  • Able to see the outside/nature
  • Adapt lightning

And here are some ideas to potentially consider (from everyone):

  • Natural light
  • Green lighting during night time.
  • Having some green areas in the office to boost the mood
  • Art deco?

Learning Spaces

We've found these needs:

  • engaging places with variation/not the same thing over and over again
  • Ability to collaborate with others efficiently without using technology or a lot of paper
  • ability to satisfy other needs (food, rest) in a learning space to increase comfort and ability to focus
  • Ability to maintain utmost focus and concentration in any way possible
  • Needs to encourage student engagement

And here are some ideas to potentially consider (from everyone):

  • place with all resources you might need for the learning itself (chargers, notebooks, computers, printers, etc)
  • open spaces! creates peaceful and satisfying atmosphere, implementing plants or even outdoor spaces, etc.
  • individual spaces for rest, food/breaks, and quiet studying, even group studying
  • Collaborative Environment
  • ability to adapt to the needs of students

Community Spaces

We've found these needs:

  • The need for finding fun in everyday life
  • More hygienic
  • The need to connect with others in public space
  • It needs to have enough space for everyone

The need for public safety

  • Connection to the outdoors
  • COVID safety
  • space needs to be used; the people are equally as important as space.
  • Needs an activity for people to do together. (Sitting, reading, board games, gym, etc.)

And here are some ideas to potentially consider (from everyone):

  • Smaller individual apartments in favor of larger community spaces
  • Large vs. small gathering space? (smaller and more individualized or larger and more social)
  • Aesthetically Appealing
  • accessible for people with different abilities (mental and physical)

Commercial & Shopping Spaces

We've found these needs:

  • The need for ares with less intense sensory experience
  • Aesthetics
  • Easy to navigate, i.e not complex
  • Having outdoor areas to be safe from a COVID perspective
  • Neutral lighting allowing for non-intrusive experience and optimal marketing impact

And here are some ideas to potentially consider (from everyone):

  • LED lighting
  • Less resource waste
  • HVAC optimization

Building Systems & Features

We've found these needs:

  • Onsite Renewables/Decarbonisation
  • Ways to decrease energy usage within buildings
  • Decrease material/energy/time cost of building
