Your Design Project 3 Final review will have two parts:

  • a 5-minute Live Presentation followed by Q&A on Wed, Aug 11 during our class session.
  • an Online Exhibit that can be viewed by reviewers anytime Thu, Aug 12 - Sat, Aug 14.

Preparing for your Live Presentation

You'll have 5 minutes to present a high-level overview of your project:

  • Who's the target audience/customer and what are their unique characteristics that influenced your design?
  • What's your POV statement — the concise statement of needs that guided your design process?
  • A very brief overview of the high-level approaches that you considered.
  • The essential design features that you chose to incorporate in your design.

You can share a few images that quickly showcase these key features in your finished design, but you won't have enough time to present a deep dive into the specifics of these features — for example, the underlying technology or any research that you did that helped guide your design thinking. So save your presentation of those supporting materials for your Online Exhibit, which reviewers can explore at their own pace.

Preparing your Online Exhibit
Example of an Online Immersive Virtual Tour

As an example of what your online exhibit can look like, here's an immersive tour of a show home that was built to showcase innovative building products:

Preparing Your Exhibits - Overview of the Process
Step 1 - Complete Your 3D Model

Continue working in your preferred 3D modeling tool to add elements that will help your reviewers to "experience" the key features in your design.

Think about each of the key features — what's the most effective way to explain and share it with your reviewers:

  • Can you add some elements to your 3D model that will allow reviewers to "see" the physical aspects of feature?
  • Can you provide additional information about the feature that will pop-up on-demand? For example:
    • Images or photographs of the feature implemented on other projects
    • YouTube movies that explain or demonstrate the feature
    • Web sites that provide background info or resources for reviewers who really want to dive deeply into a specific feature
Step 2 - Share Your 3D Model with the Teaching Team

When your 3D model is complete, you'll share it with the Teaching Team, so we can help to build your Online Exhibit.

The process will vary a bit based on what 3D modeling tool you've been using:

If you've been modeling with SketchUp Web
  • Open the main menu, and choose Download.
  • Select the SKP file format from the sub-menu.
  • Select 2021 as the version to download, and click OK.
    • The SKP file will be downloaded to the Downloads folder on your computer.
  • Copy the downloaded SKP file to your team's folder on our Shared Google Drive Workspace.

If you've been modeling with SketchUp Pro (desktop application)
  • Open the File menu, and choose Save As.
  • Select the SketchUp Models (*.skp) file format from the Save as type sub-menu.
  • Save the SKP file to a convenient location on your computer.
  • Copy the SKP file to your team's folder on our Shared Google Drive Workspace.

If you've been modeling with Fusion 360
  • Open the File menu, and choose Export...
  • Select the SketchUp Files (*.skp) file format from the Tyoe sub-menu.
  • Click the ... button at the right end of the file path and choose a convenient location on your computer to save the exported file.
  • Click Export.
    • The SKP file will be created in the Cloud and downloaded to the specified folder on your computer.
  • Copy the downloaded SKP file to your team's folder on our Shared Google Drive Workspace.

If you've been modeling using Revit
  • Open the File menu, and choose Save As > Project.
  • Save the RVT file to a convenient location on your computer.
  • Copy the RVT file to your team's folder on our Shared Google Drive Workspace.

Step 3 - Collect the Elements that You'd Like to Embed in Your Online Exhibit

Add any items that you'd like embed in your Online Exhibit to your team's folder on our Shared Google Drive Workspace.

Think creatively about all the information that's available online to enhance and augment what you've been able to include in your 3D model. For example:

  • Images or photographs of the feature implemented on other projects
  • YouTube movies that explain or demonstrate the feature
  • Web sites that provide background info or resources for reviewers who really want to dive deeply into a specific feature

Also consider whether you'd like to embed any sketches or diagrams that you created as you developed your model — so your reviewers can better understand your design thinking process.

Don't be shy about including these additional items as pop-ups within your model. This ability to pop-up additional information on-demand as your reviewer experience your model gives you the ability to really customize the experience and cater to the specific interests of different reviewers.

Step 4 - Meet with the Teaching Team to Build your Online Exhibit

The Teaching Team will be working with you as your personal consultants to help your build your Online Exhibit. So, take advantage of this opportunity to put us to work for you!

Part 1 - Start by envisioning and designing your Online Exhibit:
  • What will your reviewers see when the enter the exhibit?
  • Will there be a single viewpoint or several viewpoints that reviewers can navigate between?
  • What will the primary focus at each viewpoint in the exhibit?
    • What will be shown by default?
    • What additional information will you make available to pop-up on demand?
Part 2 - Then, sign up for a one-hour working session to meet with the Teaching Team to collaboratively building your Online Exhibit here:
  • Note: It's not critical that all members of your design team attend this working session to build your Online Exhibit.
  • Your team can choose to divide-and-conquer (split up the tasks) with some team members focusing on the live presentation and others focusing on the Online Exhibit.
