Preliminary Problem

As I sipped my coffee and looked out at the multitude of bicycles below, a passerby caught my eye. He took several minutes to lock his bike securely with a traditional lock and chain, prompting me to ponder a persistent problem: why do we still rely on these traditional methods of securing our bikes?
