WORKING PROBLEM STATEMENT

Graduate residential students have challenges and issues with garbage recycling in their apartments.

CCP1

SMART SHOJI

image
  • 23 years old
  • Born in the US, his mother is Japanese and his father is American
  • graduated in Boston and recently moved to Stanford for his PHD
  • Doing research in Finance on campus
  • Well educated in sustainability

POV1

Shoji needs to feel part of a community driven by a consistent effort towards sustainability, and to be able to pursue this commitment in his everyday life, because he believes that making a change starts from the little everyday things.

CCP2

DADDY DAVID

image
  • 30 years old
  • Lives on Campus with his partner Joanna and his little baby Daryl
  • Very busy with putting together the academic work with family duties
  • Likes to consume meals into the apartment to make sure Daryl eats healthy

POV2

David needs to balance his everyday routine between work and family, because his job requires him to be as much focused as possible. Also, he needs to keep his place as clean and tidy as possible because he wants his son to be safe.

CCP3

FOREIGNER FRANCO

image
  • 22 years old
  • Just arrived from Italy to study on Campus as a graduate student
  • Not so educated about sustainability
  • Strong desire to integrate in the US & Campus culture
  • Can be influenced by others behavior

POV3

Franco needs to understand as soon as possible habits and culture of the US and get familiar to the everyday routine of the life on campus, because the feeling of being left aside really upsets him and prevents him to be focused and productive.

POV STATEMENT

Graduate residential students might need more informations about where to put their trash, and larger bins to be able to dispose of bigger items (eg milk cans, eggs packages…) and put them in the proper place.

NOTES

This happens mostly because the bins are very tiny and there are no accessible instructions about how / where to put items.

The recycling/landfill room available on each floor is therefore not used in an efficient way because most of the garbage produced in the apartments goes to the landfill.

Also, a lot of students are foreigners and are not really acquainted with US regulations about recycling > QR code with instructions and games related?

Some of them might not be interested in recycling as well so there should be something helping find more commitment (eg limited number of usage of the landfill? / benefits related to recycling?)
