What are the principal advantages of using a single building information model of the existing conditions as the foundation for modeling proposed additions or renovations?

It is very helpful to have both versions of the model at the tip of my fingers when designing because it means that we have immediate access to the materials used in previous versions, accurate dimensions, and all of the different phases simultaneously. It allows us to keep in check the way that we manipulate our design which is perhaps more analogous to how extensions and changes are made during the construction process (the process of demolition, the inability to simply extend walls out, etc.) It offers a unique level of organization and cohesiveness.

What are the principal advantages of using a single building information model of the existing conditions as the foundation for modeling several proposed design alternatives for a portion of the building?

Having all of the design alternatives together in a single model means that we can more easily keep the model dynamic and the design alternatives will more easily respond to any changes that we make. Therefore, it reduces the margin for error and deviations between models. Using the Revit interphase it is simple to switch between options and quickly demonstrate to the client what is available to them.
