Step 1 - Generative Design Framework

A very brief description of the design decisions from Step 1 following the Generative Design Framework.

  • Design Decision 1: Designing a building to maximize light efficiency
    • Design Variables
      • Window area
      • Volume to Window Surface Area Ratio
      • WWR
    • Evaluators
      • Volume to Wall Surface Area ratio
      • Heating Load
      • Cooling Load
    • Most Important Tradeoffs to Consider
      • Natural Daylight vs heat loss/heat gain
      • Natural daylight savings vs cost for artificial light
  • Design Decision 2: Building Floor Area⇒ Office Space Availability
    • Design Variables
      • Length
      • Width
      • #offloors
    • Evaluators
      • Cost for additional floor space
      • Cost for increased width
      • Cost for increased length
      • Cost for increased height
      • Office space rental potential
    • Most Important Tradeoffs to Consider
      • Office space income potential vs construction costs
  • Design Decision 3: Space available for PV or Garden in Roof Surface
    • Roof width
    • Roof length
    • PV Potential kw per year
    • Rotation
    • Height
    • Evaluators
      • Cost of PV panels
      • Additional cost for additional roof space
      • Cost for various widths and lengths
    • Most Important Tradeoffs to Consider
      • PV income vs Construction costs
      • Additional cost for pv vs additional surface area costs

Step 2 - Generative Design Study

  • A decided to use the 3rd design I proposed earlier. I realized that this one had enough complexity to design the study. This would push me to create variables that included length, width, height, and rotation and how the solar potential is affected by this. Then an additional evaluator would include the overall cost associated with maximizing the solar potential.
  • I created inputs and outputs for the framework and created my geometry within dynamo. Something I could improve on is spending more time on the individual variables to make them more complex so that they can capture finer details.

Step 3 - Generative Design Study Results

  • With this information, I would prioritize my 2 top priorities which are to focus on solar potential with construction costs. I would ask myself was is the greatest optimization between these two evaluators…in other words, where is solar potential the highest where costs are the lowest…
