What are the principal advantages of using a single building information model of the existing conditions as the foundation for modeling proposed additions or renovations?

Using the same BIM model when proposing additions or renovations saves time so that we don’t have to start the model over from scratch. Especially, if a renovation is made that keeps the main structure of the building, it is much easier to make a few changes to the original model/building rather than create it new again. It helps us make sure that these new renovations are the only changes we are making to the building. It also shows us if our additions are compatible with the existing building or if we will instead have to drastically change the structure of the building.

What are the principal advantages of using a single building information model of the existing conditions as the foundation for modeling several proposed design alternatives for a portion of the building?

Using the same model when proposing different design alternatives for a part of the building gives us an accurate starting point of the building which is already made. Then we can see which alternative looks the best with the standing building or maybe is even most efficient. We want to make sure the proposed design is the only this we are changing of the building. Different models could look different when in reality we only want the alternatives to be the only difference between the models.
