Who Did You Interview?
- My mom
Demographics That Might Provide Helpful Context for Their Responses
- late 40's
- Lives in Atlanta suburbs
- PhD in art education (art teacher at my high school)
Key Findings from the Interview
- She finds joy and importance in repurposing items, donating for reuse, and making use of materials in the classroom
- For example, she is renovating the interior of our house, but instead of buying new furniture, we are having our current couch and dining room chairs reupholstered to make new.
- In the art world, she is always looking for materials to use on a budget, and that often means getting creative with recycled objects
- Specifically, she would push for schools to stop using styrofoam every day. Georgia hit a drought in the early 2000s, and our district switched from washing reusable lunch trays to a disposable styrofoam alternative, and she has always been ashamed of that change.
- She says that in some cases, the cure is worse than the illness. Products that may be deemed "sustainable" can create new problems when looking for solutions to others.
