What are the principal advantages of creating a conceptual design model using masses before diving into the detailed design and building element modeling?

Creating a conceptual design model using masses before diving into more detailed design and modeling is advantageous because using building masses to build a shell is a much simpler/straightforward and more efficient process. For smaller buildings, this may not make that big of a difference. But for larger, more complex buildings where the client may want a more unique shape, using masses before diving into detailed design and modeling can significantly cut down on the amount of time spent trying to get that initial geometry right, meaning that more time can be spent focusing on getting the details and individual elements to more accurately reflect what the client wants.

Mass modeling is also advantageous because it provides an easy way to evaluate different alternatives for a project, as we explored in this module. Simplifying this process and utilizing the analysis tools in Forma further saves time (and therefore money).

Can you think of any examples of a real building around the world that most likely was created by exploring the form using conceptual mass models?

Many iconic structures around the world that have unique shapes and geometries were likely created using mass models. Some examples of these are:
