Journal Entry For
Module 7 - Building Envelope Systems

Thermal insulation layers were customized for roof and wall of the model.

Shading was added to the curtain wall system.

The baseline scenario of my design is 42.6 kBtu/sqft/yr.

Starting from thermal properties of building envelope, I was finding better factors combination to improve the energy performance.

From the practice model in Module 7, I found WWR and window glass thermal properties have minor impacts while wall’s thermal properties have major impacts on EUI.

image

EUI was decreased to 42.4 kBtu/sqft/yr with adjustments only on building envelope. One of the reason is the detailed thermal properties were sent to be analyzed on Insight platform. The energy saving quantity was already be considered during the design process.

Exploring PV impacts, there were three horizontal lines in the PV sections on Insight, which I found it unusual. The horizontal lines indicated there was low PV potential for the project. However, after conducting solar analysis, I don't think the PV potential is low. Reasons are to be discussed in future sessions.

Illuminance Rendering

The first key area is lobby on the first floor. The illuminance index is below 20fc, which follows the rule required by illuminance engineering society.

Another two key areas are exhibition halls and offices respectively. Exhibition areas are lightened more through the use of curtain walls, while office areas need more electric lighting.
