What are the primary goals of creating a building model? Who are the key stakeholders?

  • The primary goal to creating a building model should be to create a digital twin. I like to think of the model as a tool to “mess up” in the digital world by iterating for us to learn and when we do build it in real life we execute the building as efficient as possible.
  • The stakeholders are all the people that are involved in the project. A digital twin offers a tool for us to collaborate with the product (the building) between the persons in the project.

How much detail should you include about the composition (layers, materials, thicknesses) of your wall, floor, and roof assemblies at different stages of your design process?

  • Conceptual design - A basic idea of the purpose of what the building should be.
  • Preliminary design - Incorporate some dimensions and key equipement. Specially long lead items (you can delay your project if you don’t submit and purchase this asap!)
  • Design development - As you progress, keep adding information to the model. In this stage you should have almost everything. Look for clash detection and try to connect to VDC and the planning team to discuss how you visualized your design and try to give your input in a collaboratively approach to the construction crew to optimize the construction sequence!!!
  • Construction documentation - All the information needed to build.. Try to think as if you were the builder. One key metric that a design metric should pursue is a maximum number of of RFI. If you keep your RFI on a low count, that means that your design is clear!

What are the advantages of getting the Revit component families (for furniture, equipment, and fittings) directly from the manufacturer versus from an online sharing website like RevitCity.com?

They of course understand their product better. Many of the websites like RevitCity usually just make the families for visualization pourposes. As it is stated on the name of this “BIM” as in Building INFORMATION Modeling, the most important part of this digital twin is not the visual part of it, but the information that the model provides. As the manufacturers know the nuts and bolts of their product, it is of course better to rely on their families.
