What are the primary goals of creating a building model? Who are the key stakeholders?

  • What do they need?
  • What do they care about most?

The primary goals of creating a building are to create a space that satisfies the needs of those who will be using the building, while also accounting the environment that the building is being built in. The key stakeholders are those who will be using the building. In this project it was the researchers. They needed a rather easy space to build that had a bathroom, storage, and areas to work and conduct their research. What they cared about most was an invasive relatively easy to build space that fit their needs.

How much detail should you include in your building model? How do you decide?

  • As you develop your initial design?
  • As you continue to iterate and develop on your design?
  • What are the key stages?
  • And how much detail should you include at each stage?

How much detail should you include about the composition (layers, materials, thicknesses) of your wall, floor, and roof assemblies at different stages of your design process?

  • Conceptual design
  • Preliminary design
  • Design development
  • Construction documentation

Many door and window manufacturers provide Revit families for doors and windows that you can specify for your building design.

  • What is the advantage to manufacturers for providing these families? (it's not free to create and provide them...)
  • What is the benefit to you as the designer of using these manufacturer-provided families? Is there an advantage to using them versus the families provided in the Revit library?

An advantage to the manufacturers providing these families is that you may be more inclined to use there windows if it fits into the design, thus, you give them money through buying the windows. As a designer, the main benefit is that these windows likely look a little better, and might bring a design more to life than the basic windows in the Revit library. Additionally, access to these designs provides more variability in the types of windows that can be used.

What are the advantages of getting the Revit component families (for furniture, equipment, and fittings) directly from the manufacturer versus from an online sharing website like RevitCity.com?

The advantages of getting the Revit component families directly from the manufacturer is that you know that the product exists. On RevitCity.com, there is no guarantee that the product that looks really good, and maybe even brings together the design really exists.
