Which types of structural framing systems and materials are most commonly used in the US for residences? For office buildings?

What factors determine why these are the most used materials?

Wood framing systems are the most popular material for residential buildings in the United States. The reason for using wood material is that wood is a flexible material that can withstand light earthquakes and tornadoes. In addition, wood has a comparatively lower price than other building materials. On the other hand, for office buildings, structural steel systems are commonly used in the U.S. The reason is that steel can support larger loads and can be used to build large structures.

Why do different teams of designers and subcontractors link and share their models during the design process?

What are the advantages of linking models?

Are there any disadvantages to linking models?

The advantage of linking models is that the model would be consistent. Therefore, different teams of designers and subcontractors can find clashes between models, and they can deal with issues to make the model better. Another advantage is that by linking the model, the structural team can model the building structure easily and does not need to build the structural element from the beginning. On the other hand, one of the disadvantages is that if the original model contains mistakes, it might affect the other model.

At what point in the project development process should design coordination start?

Is it ever too early?

Design coordination can start early because it helps prevent future interferences and issues. For example, as the gross part of the architectural design is determined, designers can create coordination. Then, the design detail, such as the creation structure system and piping system, can begin working based on the determined design. Doing so will create a smooth design process and fewer model mistakes.
