What are the principal advantages of using a single building information model of the existing conditions as the foundation for modeling proposed additions or renovations?

  • Why not create a separate model for the new proposed design?

The advantages of using a single building information model is that different parties of the project would understand the process and files would not get misplaced. Furthermore, it allows the project management team to be more organized. In my past engineering internships, multiple files needed to be uploaded on a shared drive and new individuals would be added onto the project. With the single information model, everyone involved would know the history of the project as well as the different changes that had been proposed.

What sort of complexities are introduced when you construct a building complex in phases?

  • What happens at the interfaces between the buildings as the phases advance?
  • How can you plan and prepare for these complexities as your create your initial building model?

What are the principal advantages of using a single building information model of the existing conditions as the foundation for modeling several proposed design alternatives for a portion of the building?

  • Why not create a separate model for each of the design alternatives?

By using a single building information model for several proposed design alternatives, the clients would be able to compare the alternatives a lot easier. Using a single building information brings a lot of convenience and individuals would be able to understand the challenges that can be faced throughout the construction process. Using a single building information model, would allow the designer to have the same formatting and consistency with the two alternatives.

In your project, which features of the proposed design did you choose to model as design alternatives?

  • Why did you choose these building features? And what were the biggest challenges in modeling them as the design alternatives?

An alternative floor layout has been chosen as an alternative design. With a history of working in the real estate industry, specifically with staging furniture, it is interesting how the furniture layout can affect the perspective of an individual and how the furniture layout can change the perception of a room.
