Design Journal Entry - Module 5/6

Journal Entry For
Module 5/6 - Building Layout & Circulation Systems

Here is my initial sketch of the floor plan. Some design intentions:

  • Olympic rink on the east side as figure skaters prefer warmer ice. NHL rink on the north side as hockey players prefer colder ice.
    • The east wall will be windows to allow for natural lighting into the Olympic rink, but existing trees and designed overhangs will help prevent too much solar heat gain. The NHL rink will also have windows, but it is on the north side so it will not gain much solar heat anyway, allowing for this rink to stay colder.
    • The Olympic rink will have an open concept connected to the lobby. The NHL rink will be closed off for thermal reasons, but with glass walls to still allow for more daylighting into the lobby space.
  • The NHL bleachers will come from Level 1, but the Olympic bleachers will be on Level 2. This was mostly to solve space issues, as I did not want the east wing of the building to be so wide on the first floor, but this also works out as I feel that people watching hockey matches would like to be closer to the action (so bleachers that start at Level 1 works out) while people watching figure skating can watch from above.
  • There will be a dance studio, gym, and open concept workspaces/cafe on the second floor. The walls here will also be glass (or at least have large windows) to allow for people to look down into the first floor and watch the rinks.
  • The staircase and elevator to the second floor will be around the lobby.

Linked here is me Space Design Guidelines spreadsheet. In the first tab, I listed my initial thoughts on the spaces I’d want to incorporate. In the second tab, I did a more to-scale layout of my floor plan. It was here where I was able to see better how to place spaces in accordance with spacing. Below, are screenshots of the floors, and you can see that I ended up readjusting some spaces and areas.

I then modeled the building in Revit (albeit at a high level). Below are screenshots of my two levels in plan view and a 3D view. At this step, I ended up doing some more rearrangements. I also incorporated a bridge on the second floor to make use of the space on top of the first level Zamboni room as another work area option. Doors to the NHL rink are not yet modeled as that will be an automatic sliding door (to reduce infiltration from the lobby), and I have yet to load that component into Revit. Also note that I have to round the corners of the ice rinks, and also model them as ice rather than the current generic floor.
