Summary of my pitch

Parametric design allows architects to obtain design options that leads to more reasonable design. Without software’s help, the architects have to manually look for an optimized solution and they might miss possible options. This project focuses on creating a truss roof. To enhance the versatility of the design tool this study proposes, the size of a roof and members, and the number of sections and waves are selected as a parameter. The number of members and connections and the volume of members can be obtained as an outcome.

Users

The design tool this study suggests is expected to be used by architects.

Needs

Architects spend a lot of time to find the best design solution. In addition, traditional design method faces limitation to explore more options. The design tool contributes to the reduction of working hours and enables users to be exposed to many design options.

Inputs

For the flexibility of the design tool, the required inputs are as follows.

The position of a reference point

The length of roof in X and Y directions

The number and amplitude of waves

The number of divisions in X and Y directions

The benchmark of members

Logic

Based on the inputs, the tool creates a truss roof. Also, using the generative design function in dynamo, some alternatives and their data such as the total volume are provided.

Outputs

This design tool provides three outcomes shown below.

The volume of members: Lager volume leads to higher material cost.

The number of components: More components require longer time to assemble them on site, which causes higher labor cost.

The number of connections: More connections of components need more bolts or welding, which results in higher material and labor cost.
