There is a lack of fun when doing bottle returns, the app that i use is called pant. This app's main function is to give the money back when doing bottle returns. Some features of the app is that you have a map with locations of the stores and there is a bill of returns, qr code, and personal contact information and data. I think people would be more motivated to return their bottles if there was more in it for them, many people don't really care about the extra couple cents they lose when buying the bottle, although if there is more to get out of it than just a couple cents back then i think more people would do the bottle returns.

Therefore my idea is an improved app that not only educates people about the importance of bottle returns but also lets them participate in tournaments where they can compete with others to have the most bottle returns in a certain period of time. Competitions could be 2 day sprints, month long tournaments or seasonal tournaments, here there would be big prizes for the top 3. Additionally when a certain amount of points (in bottle returns) is reached, users receive prizes. I think that this design would be more motivational and fun for the users, and it would also encourage people to pick up bottles from the ground in order to receive more points and win potential prizes.

The new app design:

To manage the uncertainties I will have to make sure that the tournaments are fun and engaging and the rewards are attractive enough for the participants. We can survey people to see what they like about current tournaments and prizes or what they want to see in the future. I will also have to take into account cheating and find methods to ensure that people can not cheat (eg. verified transactions). As a company we need to make sure that we do not have financial losses due to the rewards and prizes therefore we could raise money from other bottle returning companies or wildlife conservation organisations, and we could have some prizes be from retailers like a huge box of soft drinks or snacks that people could win. To further push the boundaries of the current app the new app could have an AI bot, where people could ask questions about the app or about the recycling process etc. I think that with these new additions my improved app can significantly increase user engagement and motivation for bottle returns, By combining educational content, competitive elements, and rewards. This approach not only benefits the users but also contributes to environmental sustainability by encouraging more people to recycle.
