Journal Entry For
Module 7 - Building Envelope Systems

I put a curtain wall on the East side because the hill slops down to this side and visitors can enjoy the vista. In addition, to control the sunlight I designed the vertical sunshade fin on this side.

Around the courtyard, I installed curtain walls to reduce energy load of lighting system by utilizing daytime sunlight.

Compared to the Easten facade, the Southern one was designed to reduce openings, thereby it can improve the energy efficiency. (South: 25%, East: 71%)

In terms of materials, I think that the roof material can be improved by changing to a more energy-efficient option. Moreover, the location of PV panel can affect the total amount of thermal absorption from the rooftop.

After setting the building envelope-related factors as BIM level, I got the EUI as shown in below.

55.2 kBtu/ft2/yr

image
  • Further Improvement (PV)

By considering lighting relating factor as BIM level and setting PV relating factors as below, the building can achieve 37.1 kBtu/ft2/yr.

PV - Panel Efficiency (20.4%)

PV - Payback Limit (20year)

PV - Surface Coverage (60%)

  • Further Improvement (HVAC system)

ASHARE Package Terminal Heat Pump is the best option to improve EUI of the building design.

17.6 kBtu/ft2/yr
