Design Journal Entry - Module 5/6

Journal Entry For
Module 5/6 - Building Layout & Circulation Systems

For module 6, I realized that there are many chances compared to module 5 (mainly building indoor layout). Overall, my space budget is 36219 (slightly over 35000). I have total 8 exhibits area for visitors.

I designed a atrium at the main entry gate so that visitors can have a great view when they enter the door. In addition, they will see the shop and snack bar cafe in front of them. More important, I also deliberately design the stairs at right side, and hide the elevators at east side (they will not see it directly). In front of lobby, there is a courtyard for people rest and eating. The yard can also access to the second floor terraces, encouraging people using the stairs.

The exhibits were designed at two sides of buildings, visitors can walk around. The hallway are shared with the exhibit area so people are not restricted. To the end of hallway at level 1, there is a large auditorium for education presentation and movie. Its capacity can endure a lot of persons. Next to the education room, we have the storage room and open office for people’s questions. On east side of building, we can see a relatively small conference room for employees or important guest.

Heading to level 2, we have additional 3 exhibits areas, two of them connected to the main stairs, and there is also a restroom (the utility room an connect to the level 1 restroom). Visitors can go outside of terraces or cross the skybridge to east side of building, and there is only one exhibit. The private and administrative area are located here for staff eating, working privately.

For level terraces, I plan grow some plants and lawn for people rest and relax. In summer, we can provide some shade for courtyard and terraces, and vegetation can prevent heat going through the building. In winter, we can receive large amount of solar energy. On third level roof, PV system is also installed

The building has dimension 200 x 150 ft, and I add sufficient number of exits so that visitors can leave the building quickly and safely. Under the rough estiamtion, the visitors can be directed to the exit without exceeding 250 ft distance. For level 1, we have 5 exit gate, each direction has one exit. For level 2, we need to let people exit the building through level 1. They can leave the building from courtyard and west main stairs, and arrive at the main gate exit. This will not exceed the requirement 250 ft. In the future, further analysis should be conducted if we need to install the exterior stairs for people on the terraces to evacuate directly.
