What are the principal advantages of using a single building information model of the existing conditions as the foundation for modeling proposed additions or renovations?

  • Why not create a separate model for the new proposed design?

You don’t want to create a separate model because by keeping it all on one you can see what renovations need to happen to the old building. It also helps you get proportions and see how the new addition connects with the old building.

What sort of complexities are introduced when you construct a building complex in phases?

  • What happens at the interfaces between the buildings as the phases advance?
  • How can you plan and prepare for these complexities as your create your initial building model?

What are the principal advantages of using a single building information model of the existing conditions as the foundation for modeling several proposed design alternatives for a portion of the building?

  • Why not create a separate model for each of the design alternatives?

The principle advantages are that measurements are harder to mess up and it leaves less room for error. It also allows you to see how the old building was made, which gives a lot of information regarding what materials you’re using and how the two should connect.

In your project, which features of the proposed design did you choose to model as design alternatives?

  • Why did you choose these building features? And what were the biggest challenges in modeling them as the design alternatives?

I chose my roof to be my design alternative. I chose this feature because while I liked my proposed roof better, if the client wanted a seamless addition the continuation of the old roof would’ve achieved that. It depends on what they ultimately desire and if they are will to let the new addition look more like an addition. The biggest challenge was creating a new phase and then remember to copy elements from new construction if I was going to change any of the elements so that they wouldn’t be alternated in the new construction phase.
