Your Design Journal entries for this module should highlight:

  • the design alternatives that you modeled and tested
  • the results of the analyses and how they influenced your thinking about how to move forward

Use text , images, web links, movies... Whatever media works best to express your ideas!

Images of Your 3 Design Proposals

Paste screenshots of your 3 proposed building forms here...

Proposal 2: a single large building

Proposal 1: a low level buidling with roof designed to be towards the sun, aiming to maxmize the solar energy.

Proposal 3: a mid-level building

Side-By-Side Comparisons of Your Analysis Results

Paste at least 2 screenshots showing the side-by-side comparisons of the analysis results for your 3 proposed building forms here…

Solar energy is related to the surface area and the height of a building. Lower buildings are more likely to be shaded by surrounding taller structures.

Daylight Potential for taller buildings is higher

Your Recommendation for the “Best” Design Option

Create a few paragraphs outlining a brief explanation of why you chose this design option as the “best” after comparing your analyses of the proposals. Explain your reasoning and the tradeoffs that influenced your decision about which design option to move forward with.

Goal and targets

Sao Paulo has high solar potential due to its tropical location, offering abundant sunlight year-round, making it an excellent location for solar energy generation. For the project, my goal is to maximize the available solar PV generating on-site to offset energy use. The target is to offset at least 75% of annual energy use with onsite solar PV.

Based on my goal and targets, my proposal 2 is identified as my best design option given that it has higher solar energy and daylight potential. I explored the single-tall-building, mid-level building and lower buildings in this analysis. Based on the site context, the building site is surrounded by a bunch a high buildings, which leads to shaded area. These shaded area potentially impact the daylight potential and solar energy. Based on the analysis, 90% of the facets of proposal 2 are able to receive adequate daylight through the installation of larger window or conventioanl window which can reduce the energy consumption in lighting.
