What are the principal advantages of creating a conceptual design model using masses before diving into the detailed design and building element modeling?

It allows us to more experimental and disinhibited in the way that we begin our design process. We can try all kinds of things quickly while having an understanding of how those changes might affect the square footage and find resolutions before adding in things that are harder to change.

Should all buildings be modeled first using conceptual masses?

A conceptual mass should be used when the scale of the project is so big that there is plenty of flexibility in the interior organization of space and we must instead focus on the overall shape and form of the building first. For a small house, the organization of space inside is far more important and will play a bigger role in guiding what the shell of the house will look like.
