I used steel columns and beam systems for this design to allow for greater spans. Although the architectural design of the building entails a lot of wood, the steel frame can ensure there is more open space — a key design tent from the architect based on the layout — while keeping a non-intrusive appearance. Beams at vertical shaft spaces such as the staircase or central atrium with skylight are removed to prevent obstruction to access or view. The steel frame resides within the building’s envelope to maintain the appearance of the facade. None of the beams span more than 30 feet.

Staircase. A beam may interfere with the railing, which can be removed since the stair is next to the wall.
