Which types of structural framing systems and materials are most commonly used in the US for residences? For office buildings?

What factors determine why these are the most used materials?

Why do different teams of designers and subcontractors link and share their models during the design process?

What are the advantages of linking models?

Changes made by one team in a given project certainly affect the other team. For example, If a subcontractor doesn't have the updated model the building could be built based on the previous model and this could led to conflict between parties. So linking and sharing model help to have efficient communication and avoid conflicts.

Are there any disadvantages to linking models?

Two persons can’t change the same thing at the same time.

How do you think design coordination was done before we started using digital models?

What advantages does doing this coordination digitally have over previous methods?

Probably through printed drawings, mail, email, fax and also in person meetings.

Helps to save time, money, and resource.

What strategies can design teams use to find and avoid clashes prior to the start of construction?

What can be done besides sharing the models digitally?

Contract : Clearly defined agreement between parties: their expectations, and respective risks and obligations.

Schedule and cost estimation: Setting reasonable cost for the project with a reasonable timeline

Proper documentation: well prepared drawing and specification documents

At what point in the project development process should design coordination start?

Is it ever too early?
