The Design Decision I Studies

The design decision I studied focused on sustainable heating and embodied energy of the building. The Radiant heating allows for more even and efficient heating system but it is more expensive than traditional. The total embodied energy was compared to the cost of the building to find an optimum.

The scatter plots indirectly show the trade-off between the total floor area of the building and energy/cost of the building. While the Total cost and the embodied energy were calculated in a near-constant, linear fashion, the embodied energy/cost displays the trade-off of adding more floor area while minimizing the energy usage in the building. Additional metrics such as radiant heat cost were added to increases the information available to the designer. The more radiant heating in the building the less working energy will be present because the radiant heat system is more efficient than a traditional forced air. This study focused on the embodied energy however, and not the working energy. For future studies, the Dynamo graph is set up to calculate working vs embodied energies as an additional metric.

From the study, the optimal designs will be at a balance of low square footage and low cost. From the plots, a curve can be seen. The lower curve on the middle scale factor vs. energy per cost represents the optimal values in the design space. Designer can use the study to chose the minimized energy/cost while meeting the square footage requirement.
