Module 3 - Project Goals Targets & Strategies
Goal 1: Reduction in Carbon Emissions
- Measure: Cradle-to-grave embodied carbon analysis (in kg of CO2 eq)
- Targets:
- minimally acceptable value: 30% reduction from previous year baseline for building of equal size
- desired / target value: 40% reduction from previous year baseline for building of equal size
- Strategies:
- carbon sequestration through native plants
- utilizing passive thermal heating through placement of windows
- incorporate natural lighting through windows to lower lighting demand (and therefore electricity demand)
- local sourcing of materials
- reclaimed material use/ reuse of materials
Goal 2: Sustainable sourcing/use of materials
- Measure: Evaluation of proportion of materials reclaimed/reused for building in conjunction with the material baselines outlined from the 2021 carbon leadership forum in terms of embodied carbon.
- Targets:
- minimally acceptable value: 30% materials reclaimed/reused
- desired / target value: 50% materials reclaimed/reused
- Strategies:
- lessen concrete use/needs
- local material allocation
- use of wood and natural materials within insulation
Goal 3: Net-zero Energy Site Status
- Measure: Measuring the input electricity from the grid in comparison to the output of solar energy in kWh
- Targets:
- minimally acceptable value: input/output ratio of 0.5
- desired / target value: input/output ratio of 1
- Strategies:
- solar array on roof and over parking garage/lot
- energy-efficient design to lower energy demand of building
- passive heating/cooling
- use of natural lighting via windows to decrease lighting needs
Goal 4: Create a space that promotes happiness, learning, and community
- Measure: Visitor happiness and overall experience
- Targets:
- minimally acceptable value: 60% visitor satisfaction rate
- desired / target value: 85% visitor satisfaction rate
- Strategies:
- survey for visitors to comment on the space
- visitor interaction with the space through activities, learning exhibitions
- visitor interaction with active spaces
- natural lighting
- natural life (plants, use of natural materials like wood, rock, greenery)
