Wasatch Sunset
Geometry: I started with two sine curves, one standard, one inverted. I then played with the amplification for the curves and number of sine waves to create a dynamic curved wall structure.
Image Inspiration:
I recently committed to the University of Utah for my MArch degree, and this past weekend I visited Utah for a friend’s wedding and tour the school. When I was cleaning up the venue after the reception, I saw the most beautiful sunset reflected on the Wasatch front. During the day, the mountains are gray, brown, and green, but during the sunset hour they glow a stunning pink-purple which can be seen on the sculpture as the line of purple pixels against the green of the sage brush and blue of the sky.

In this design, I wanted to make a structure that could signal an entrance without having a true “front door.” I think most buildings don’t actually need a traditional front door, but because they are easily recognized.
Therefore, I generated a standard square volume, and then put a cantilevered space to signal a path in which to enter. I have a great interest in truss design, and I think truss bridge forms can create beautiful, sturdy, and open spaces.
