Structural System Strategy:

  • My motivation was to emulate the wooden elements of the architectural form in the structural system. I wanted the structural system to be biophilic and complement the surrounding architecture. Moreover, wooden structural systems are more sustainable in comparison to concrete and steel, a fact which was another motivated factor behind the material selection for this design. Despite the narrower span of wooden columns, I was able to strategically configure the grid system to ensure that the expansiveness of the interior spaces could be maintained without compromising the structural integrity of the system. This was achieved by placing grid intersection along the envelope as well as at irregular intervals between 10’ and the max 25’ to allow the grid network to conform to the architectural program. I selected 10x10 timber columns to give these structural elements a sense of presence and weight in the program without obstructing views or taking up too much floor space. For the beam system I selected 4x10 dimension lumber to span between columns. These dimensions were selected so that the beam systems would not protrude too much from the ceiling.
