To me, for something to be described as sustainable, it is long-lasting with minimal upkeep and extraction. The methods for proper maintenance can be easily taught/learned and the building, process, practice, or whatever is being described as “sustainable” makes sense and is fair for all parties involved. Since we are on Earth, the environment is always included as a party that is involved. So whatever is meant to be sustainable should be easily repeated for generations and minimally intrusive to the environment. This typically shows itself in examples from nature that we’d be keen to learn from, requires a well thought out plan for the impacts of what’s being built/developed, fail-safes and troubleshooting methods for the inevitable bumps, and is often meant to be as simple and efficient as possible.
