Description
I chose to design a vacation home for this assignment, inspired by the modernist inspiration photos chosen. Like the second inspiration photo, I incorporated glass curtain walls on the upper floor facing down the hillside to allow for great views down to the lake and valley. The bulk of the design program is concentrated on the lower level, such as the three bedrooms, a study, a garage and a bathroom, to allow for the upper story to serve primarily as a flowing open concept living room, kitchen and dining area for entertaining. However, the upper floor does include a bathroom and storage space so that guests enjoying the hosting space don’t have to go far for convenience, nor disturb sleeping guests below. This space, featuring additions such as an entertainment center, couches, a piano and fireplace, flows into the outdoor terrace, which features a nook carved out for seating and entertaining. The sloped roof creates high ceilings to add grandeur to this vacation home. Ample windows on all sides allow for the lower level space to feel light and airy, allowing light from the driveway and surrounding path carved into the hillside to enter into the bedrooms downstairs. Glass doors on two of the bedrooms allow for further independence as those guests have their own entrances to explore the outdoor landscape.
