Which types of structural framing systems and materials are most commonly used in the US for residences? For office buildings?

Most US residences and office buildings are made of steel. There are a number of reasons why we prefer to use steel instead of other materials. Steel, when compared to other materials, binds better with concrete and is quite cost-effective. However, in regards to sustainability, steel should not be the United States’ “first choice” when it comes to constructing residences and buildings.

Why do different teams of designers and subcontractors link and share their models during the design process?

Linking models gives designers and subcontractors the ability to coordinate with one another. The building design process is not one led by just one person; it is a task that is spearheaded by different teams and leaders that have differing ideas. These ideas can sometimes clash, which means it is crucial that links are shared to better cooperate with one another. Although there are more advantages than disadvantages, there is definitely one main disadvantage of it being convoluted. Having one workspace can sometimes be more effective than multiple platforms.

How do you think design coordination was done before we started using digital models?

Design coordination likely involved an abundance of in-person team meetings and brainstorming sessions in buildings and outdoor spaces. Now, with the advancement of building design technology, most of the coordination can be done online through design softwares like Revit. In my opinion, a hybrid of these two options would be the best way to build the most optimal structure.
