The open plan of this space is clearly very important, perhaps one could say of paramount importance to the experience of the space. Thus, it was critical to not place columns in e.g. the atrium or stairways, which would obstruct such views. Steel was chosen for the structural framing system because it accented well the modernist, contemporary atmosphere of the space. As shown below, the columns are restricted to the walls, not intruding on the spacious interior.
