Overall the HVAC exercise wasn’t too difficult following along with the intro video. There were a few minor issues that I encountered when trying to copy the ducts and air terminals from Level 0 to Level 1 but I ended up taking parts of the system and re-working the rest. The Flux Duct was a useful tool but also gave errors when things were too close to each other (and sometimes when it seemed like they were spaced just fine) so leaving more room than anticipated was a lesson learned.
In terms of meeting the spatial design goals I thought it was relatively straightforward to meet the space schedule expectations for each room’s airflow supply. A little planning and organization went a long way to meet the necessary criteria. However, with more air terminals to achieve airflow in the larger spaces there were aesthetic sacrifices that I would intend to address if I were to continue with this project. In terms of design recommendations to make the building more sustainable I would recommend find tuning the air handler units to have ranges much closer to expected needs (based on monthly data), smart lighting systems that can save energy when spaces aren’t in use, and maximizing daylight while optimizing thermal insulation by using double paned windows.
