Design Journal Entry - Module 12 Wrap Up

Overview

Replace this text with your reflections on your design journey through class from a higher level and share your insights about the entire experience. What were:

  • Key / Essential / Unique Design Features that you explored in your project.
    • One of the key features of my design is the atrium which is the heart of my building. The atrium levels through the first to the fifth floor, it offers a path for natural sunlight into the building which not only provides a feeling of openness and connectivity of the building visually but also a great way to promote sustainability, especially at Copenhagen where the sunlight hours are limited at most seasons. Another feature of my design is the outdoor area, the patios on the first floor and third floor and the open rooftop on the fifth floor. The outdoor spaces provide space where people can enjoy fresh air and direct sunlight. Additionally, the blend of two facades also allow my building to bring more natural light for the exhibition areas and connection of the atrium and the exhibitions.
  • Your Big Successes -- what worked very well and what features you're most proud to share as examples to inspire others.
    • The atrium is my most successful feature of my building in both design and function. The glazing roof on the fifth floor allows the sun to shine through the atrium at each floor of the building, bathes the first floor atrium resting area in the sun, and reduces the need for artificial lighting.. The strategic use of a glass-walled elevator and circular stairs within the atrium ensures accessible movement.
  • Your Big Challenges -- what aspects of the project created the biggest challenges and what would you do differently (in hindsight) to avoid or overcome these challenges.
    • The most significant challenge was devising a structure that could support the atrium and different floor plans. Since my room layouts for all the floors are different, it was really hard to find a way to balance the column support requirements for all my floor plans. At the end of my project, I used a lot of columns but in two different sizes. The bigger ones are supporting the main structure of my building like the exterior walls and the atrium, and the smaller ones are for additional support and load reduction for the bigger ones. If I were to do the project again, I would think about the column locations when I layout each floor plan to make sure they align well and avoid future structural problems.
  • Lessons Learned -- what sage words of advice would you share with other students who are embarking on a similar project.
    • First of all, I learned how to use REVIT through this class. Going through the project, I also learned the importance of working with multidisciplinary. A successful design requires not only great consideration of each design discipline but also the balance between all the elements, in this case, aesthetic and sustainable architecture design, stable structural design, adequate HVAC system, and sustainable plumbing connection. For people who are also doing the REVIT project, I think it is important to know that the first draft is just the starting point. In the process of considering other disciplinary aspects of the building the design needs to be upgraded to respond to the challenges like functionality and sustainability of the building.
