I started my structural design process by placing steel columns (W12 x 26). The goal was to avoid placing any structural elements in the stairs opening and keeping an atrium space open. I ended up placing most of the columns by the perimeter of the building, interior walls, and stair openings. I left one column in the middle of an atrium and a few columns in front of the window to avoid long beam spans. I also made sure that my beams had an offset to be below the floor system.
