Our Testing Protocol / Script for the Testing Sessions

💡
Outline your testing protocol--a description of the steps that anyone on your team can follow to gather feedback from testing. It should include the following sections. IMPORTANT - You should not explain all the features of your product or lead your users thru a demonstration of its design features. For truly useful feedback, allow your users to interact with your prototypes and discover its features. Try to be an observer, not a tour guide. Answer any questions that come up as users interact with the prototypes, but keep in mind that asking "what do think will happen?" or "how do you think that might work?" will solicit very useful information about what's going on in the user's mind. Don't try to sell or pitch your product to your users. You're not trying to convince them that your product is good. Rather, you're hoping to learn from observing and hearing how they feel about your product. Then, after users have had a chance to explore your prototypes, you can ask about any specific issues that you'd like them to share their feedback on.

What will you share with your users to interact with?

General procedure:

  1. Show total "perfect" product from our point of view within the presentation
  2. On the following slides zoom into each product feature
  3. Use mentimeter, e.g., for people to express their opinions

For each feature that you're testing, how will you use your prototypes?

Aesthetics
  • Show “only” the PV film layer but in different color codes
Flexibility
  • Show drawings of:
    • different products
    • different products with different sizes
    • different products with different weights
    • for testers to compare them and assess their preferences

Energy Efficiency
Price Point
  • Demonstrate Amazon products of similar actions with different sizes & attach durations for charging to it, plus the sizes (e.g. powerbank, regular electric charger...)

What will you ask them to do?

What will you ask users to do with your prototypes?

Aesthetics
  • On a scale of 1-10, how important is aesthetics to you? (Mentimeter)
  • Which of the depicted color types would you opt for?
  • Fill out mentimeter
Flexibility
  • What would you want to charge with the PV (phone, laptop, …)?
  • Which of those products would you be willing to carry around (in terms of size and weight)?
  • Fill out mentimeter
Energy Efficiency
  • Would you be okay with waiting 2 hours for your iPhone to be 50% charged?
  • (Same type of question for each type of product we listed -> Ask for winning type)
  • Fill out mentimeter
Price Point
  • Would you be willing to invest more into this type of product than into a power bank that charges the product twice as fast?
  • Fill out mentimeter

What will you observe?

What you will be observing and noting as you watch users interact with your prototypes?

  • Emotions and reactions from people (how do they look in the camera while we present it)?
  • Observe the number of “active” members (which can tell us more about how fascinated they are by our product)
  • Answers via mentimeter
  • Feedback through direct questions during our presentation

What will you ask them to share feedback on after the testing?

What questions will you ask your users after they've had a chance to interact with and explore your prototypes?

  • Expectations: we plan that our product will be useful for at least 10 years, do you consider this to be sufficient and long-lasting? (Goal to find out: Do people have the same expectations for a portable PV as compared to an installed PV on the roof?)
  • Would you prefer the PV set to come in one color of your choice or multiple colors (i.e. all blue or 2 green, 3 pink, 5 blue…)
  • How important is it for you that we are using sustainable materials for our product to ensure an efficient & green life cycle (production, transportation, end-use…)
  • If plastic was used in the PV product, would that affect your buying decision?(Goal to find out: plastics is a sustainable product in the sense that it is long-lasting and resilient, and it would be helpful to protect the PV cells)
