Site Context

I would like to propose New York City as the project site for my Sustainable Build Environment Learning and Exhibition Center. Some unique factors of my site is that its at the very southern edge of Manhattan and overlooks the Upper Bay accompanied by the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island National Museum of Immigration, etc. There is currently a park at the site and it is right in front of the Castle Clinton National Monument. The site coordinates are 40°42'15"N , 74°00'53"W.

Due to the proximate location of the site to the sea, there is high humidity around the year, and the Highrise building in North of the site has little impact on sunlight due to the site being in the Northern hemisphere. At the site sunlight majorly comes from the southern side and there is almost nothing blocking the site at that side.

Your Recommendation for the “Best” Design Option

Base on my initial design goals of Site EUI reduction, Water Conservation, Reduced Carbon Footprint and Cost effective building, I have chosen proposal 1 as my base design.

Proposal 1 has lower average operational energy compared to other two proposals. This will help me achieve my goals of Site EUI reduction, reduced carbon footprint and cost effective building much easier compared to other proposals.

Solar Energy: Proposal 1 has overall higher solar energy production per square foot, which would help generate more electricity while having lesser investment in photovoltaics.

Daylight Potential: Proposal 1 has overall larger area that has more amount of daylight compared to other two proposal, that would help in having natural lighting and in turn make it easier to achieve my target goals.

Sun hours: Proposal 1 has slightly more duration of sunlight compared to other proposals around the year.

Overall Proposal 1 has performed consistently better that other proposals and ha much more potential in terms of modularity and flexibility. Proposal 1 will have lesser energy requirements to achieve lighting and heating requirements of the occupants. The design of proposal 1 gives much more direct visibility to the amazing landmarks near the building such as the Statue of Liberty along with some national museums and monuments.
