Notes on Wallenberg (Project 2 Warmup)

Contrasting sections of multi use building

This building (160 and 170 certainly feel like the same building when inside) has a number of different official uses. International relations, hci classes, spatial and data analysis, general counsel, etc. Different portions of the building exude highly variable designs. Front of Wallenber is open, bright, aesthetically pleasing. Covered cubicles for working alone, nice tables and cushioned benches for working together. Main classroom is thin but opens up to feel much larger than it is. Glass railings let light travel to the second floor to the more secluded work areas. Lots of glass. Second floor maintains design of first floor. Classrooms all have windows, even just to each other, so that space feels more open and light can travel.

Downstairs is a basement with no light, no windows even between classrooms, no amenities, just barebones classrooms that are used for CS sections. Similar story with 3rd floor. 3rd floor hallway forgoes the nice cushioned workspaces for outdoor looking brown wooded benches. , ceiling is white, doors are white, sterile looking single hallway with artificial light. I have been on the 4th floor. It returns many of the design choices from the 1st and 2nd floors, more of an open office workspace, windows, nice rooms and seating, etc.

eclectic usage of space, and eclectic, confusing design for people who have not been in the building before. Exit in the back of the building is expected, but only exits are in front. IF you have a class listed on the 3rd floor of wallenberg
