Converting Coordination Models into Revit Elements

Coordination models let you view information from related models, but you cannot edit them. They’re “look, but can’t change”.

You can:

  • Choose whether to display the coordination models in each Revit project view.
  • Convert a coordination model into editable Revit elements.

Setting the Visibility of Coordination Models

To show or hide coordination models in a Revit view:

  • Open the view.
  • Open the View > Visibility/Graphics Overrides tool (VG).
  • Switch to the Coordination Models tab.
  • Use the checkboxes to turn each coordination model's visibility on or off in that view.

  • Convert Terrain into Toposolid
  • Convert Context Buildings into Generic Models

Converting Coordination Models into Editable Revit Elements

You can convert coordination models into equivalent Revit elements so you can edit them as you develop your design in Revit.

  • Terrain models are converted into Revit toposolids.
  • Buildings models are converted into Revit generic models.

The tradeoff is:

  • Coordination models are lightweight (they don’t bloat your Revit model), but you can’t edit them.
  • Equivalent Revit elements require additional memory (and could slow down your modeling), but you can edit them.

To convert a coordination model to Revit:

  • Open the Collaborate > Manage Models > Manage Scenarios tool.
  • Click the three dot menu to the right of a coordination model in the Other Models list.
  • image
  • Choose Convert to Revit.
  • After you convert a coordination model, it will be removed from the list of linked models.

Cleaning Up Converted Terrain

If your building sits on a sloping site, the Terrain model (and the equivalent Revit toposolid) will likely overlap elements on the lowest levels of your building model.
