Grouping Spaces into System Zones

Use System Zones to group Spaces in your model into areas served by shared mechanical equipment.

An easy way to think about this is that each group of spaces sharing a single thermostat (or HVAC controller) is a separate System Zone. Some examples:

  • Apartments or hotel rooms typically have a single zone, with a thermostat controlling the entire unit.
    • If individual rooms in the unit have separate thermostats, each is a separate zone.
  • Retail spaces often have their own zone, controlled separately from adjacent stores.
  • Office spaces are often divided into many zones, each controlled by separate thermostats.

Give each System Zone a unique and easily recognizable name (using the Name instance property) to make it easier to identify the zone in analysis reports and schedules.
