Installation has three parts: install the pyRevit extension inside Revit, set up the MCP server on your PC, and connect Claude to it.
Before you start
- Revit with pyRevit installed
- uv, the Python package manager the project uses. To install it, open PowerShell and run:
- Git, which you need for the clone step below
powershell
powershell -ExecutionPolicy ByPass -c "irm https://astral.sh/uv/install.ps1 | iex"1. Turn on pyRevit Routes
In Revit, go to the pyRevit tab → Settings → Routes and turn on Routes Server. pyRevit then listens at http://localhost:48884/.
2. Get the code
Clone the repo somewhere permanent, such as C:\Tools:
powershell
cd C:\Toolsgit clone https://github.com/mcp-servers-for-revit/mcp-server-for-revit-pythonThen rename the folder so it ends in .extension, for example mcp-server-for-revit-python.extension.
3. Install the extension in Revit
Go to pyRevit tab → Settings → Custom Extensions and add the folder that contains your .extension folder (in this example, C:\Tools). Save, then reload pyRevit. You may need to restart Revit completely.
pyRevit’s Extensions manager also has an install option. However, the clone gives you the main.py file the MCP server needs anyway, so using that single copy for both is simpler.
4. Install the Python dependencies
In the repo folder, run:
powershell
cd C:\Tools\mcp-server-for-revit-python.extensionuv sync5. Pair with Revit
Open a project in Revit and choose MCP → Bridge → Connect, then approve the consent prompt. This creates an encrypted pairing secret for your Windows user. Then test the connection from the repo folder:
powershell
uv run --frozen python -c "import anyio; from main import revit_get; print(anyio.run(revit_get, '/status/'))"You should get back "status": "active" and "health": "healthy". Opening the URL in a browser won’t work for this test, because the browser request isn’t paired and gets denied.
6. Connect Claude
Claude Desktop: go to Settings → Developer → Edit Config and add the following inside mcpServers:
json
"Revit Connector": { "command": "uv", "args": ["run", "--frozen", "mcp", "run", "C:\\Tools\\mcp-server-for-revit-python.extension\\main.py"]}Restart Claude Desktop. The Revit tools should then appear.
Claude Code:
powershell
claude mcp add -s user "Revit-Connector" -- uv run --frozen mcp run C:\Tools\mcp-server-for-revit-python.extension\main.pyTips
- Use the default stdio setup above rather than the HTTP modes. stdio needs no token in your config.
- If Claude Desktop can’t find
uv, replace"uv"with its full path. Runningwhere uvin PowerShell will show it. - Any request that edits the model or runs Python shows you the payload in Revit first, so keep an eye out for that prompt.
- To revoke access, choose MCP → Bridge → Disconnect.
