Using Claude to Create a Parametric Table Component

I'll write a Dynamo 3.x Python script that builds the table family from the Furniture template, with flexing reference planes, labeled dimensions and locked geometry.

The script parametric_table_family.py builds a new table family from Revit's Furniture template and saves it as an .rfa file. It doesn't change your project unless you choose to load the family into it.

How it works

• All eight parameters you listed are instance parameters. They are grouped under Dimensions and Materials.
• Reference planes are dimensioned from the template's center planes, and those dimensions are labeled with family parameters. The tabletop and the leg faces are locked to the planes, so the table flexes when you change values.
• Leg height follows the formula Table Height − Tabletop Thickness.
• Number of Legs accepts 4, 6 or 8:
• 4: one leg at each corner.
• 6: adds one leg at the center of each long side.
• 8: adds two evenly spaced legs on each long side.
• Any other number: shows the 4 corner legs.
• A few helper parameters are driven by formulas and appear greyed out: half dimensions, leg offsets and visibility toggles. Don't delete them, because the flexing depends on them.
• Before saving, the script changes the length and width, checks that the geometry follows, and then undoes the change.

How to use it

1. Open Dynamo 3.x and add a Python Script node. Set its engine to CPython3 or PythonNet3.
2. Paste the code into the node.
3. Connect the inputs. All three are optional:
• IN[0]: a save path. This can be a full .rfa path or a folder. The default is your Documents folder.
• IN[1]: a Boolean that loads the family into the open project.
• IN[2]: a .rft template path, if the script can't find the Furniture template automatically.
4. Run the graph. The OUT port reports the saved path, or the error and traceback if something fails.

Things to adjust

• The default sizes are set in inches near the top of the script: 30″ high, 36″ × 72″, a 1.5″ top and 3″ legs. To work in metric, divide millimetres by 25.4.
• The table length must stay greater than 4 × Leg Size, or the 8-leg spacing breaks.
• The two material parameters start as By Category. Choose materials in the project, or in the Family Types dialog.

I haven't been able to run this in Revit here, so open the saved .rfa first and flex it in the Family Types dialog before you use it on a project.

That error comes from my SetValueString call: Revit only accepts it for parameters that have units, and an integer parameter has none. The fix is to call Set directly and force the integer version of it.

I've changed one line in parametric_table_family.py, the one that sets the default for Number of Legs. It now calls the integer version of FamilyManager.Set explicitly, so the Python engine can't pick the decimal-number version by mistake.

Re-paste the code into the Python node and run it again. If the script stops at a later step, send me the new error and I'll fix that too.
