Installing Karamba3D in Grasshopper

Install the Karamba3D Grasshopper Extension

Option 1:Ā Use the Package Manager in Rhino

  • Open the Rhino 7 application.
  • Open the Tools > Package Manager tool.
  • Search for Karamba 3D (version 2.1.0.171).
  • Click the Install button.
  • Exit, then restart Rhino 7 application.
  • Click OK in the dialog that appears notifying you that an update to Rhino is waiting to be installed.

Option 2:Ā Download and Run the Karamba 3D Installer

  • Run the Karamba3D installer in your Window environment by opening the installer file located here:
  • Karamba3D Installer FileLinks to an external site.

  • Choose
    • FULL Installation (you'll install and point to a license file in the next step)
    • SI or Imperial Units

Check that the Installation was Successful

  • Open Grasshopper in Rhino.
  • Accept the Karamba 3D License conditions.
  • You should see a Karamba3D tab in the Grasshopper toolbar.

Install the Karamba3D License

Copy the Karamba License file to your computer

  • Copy the License File and instructions to a convenient location on your computer.Ā 
    • Karamba License File for 2024Ā >> a new Karamba License file for 2024 is on the way!
  • Unblock the License File in Windows if necessary
    • Right-click on Karamba3D_License_2023_12.lic, and choose Properties from the contextual menu.
    • If you see a security warning at the bottom of the General tab, turn on the Unblock checkbox to reassure windows that this file is OK and should not be removed.

Load the Karamba License file in Grasshopper

  • Open the Rhino application as an administrator.
    • Right-click on the Rhino icon in the Start Menu and choose Run as Administrator from the contextual menu.
  • Open Grasshopper in Rhino.
  • Switch to the Karamba3D tab and drag the License component (far left end of the toolbar) onto the Grasshopper canvas.
  • Right-click on the red ā€œKā€ icon or theĀ "License"Ā label of theĀ "License"component and select ā€œLoad license fileā€œ.
    • Locate the License file.
    • You'll receive a message indicating the license file has been successfully copied.

Test Your Installation

  • Restart Rhino and Grasshopper.
  • Switch to the Karamba3D tab and drag the License component (far left end of the toolbar) onto the Grasshopper canvas.
  • Attach a Panel node to the output of the License component, and the license status and expiration date will be displayed in the panel.
